The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), has finally let go of a mother and her newborn baby held hostage for three weeks following the husband’s inability to offset their medical bills.

Mr. Umoru Imokha Abdulahi, the husband of Mrs Happiness Peter, has earlier cried out to Nigerians for help when his medical bills skyrocketed to over N530,000, lamenting that his wife, who put to bed through Ceaseran Section (CS) on March 20th, 2025, and their new born baby were being detained at UBTH over his inability to offset the bill.

Recall that the young man’s wife put to bed through CS on March 20th, 2025, and was discharged on March 27th, a week after, with a total bill of N380,000, but could not pay his bills due to his poor financial status.

According to him, he paid a deposit of N50,000 before admission and another N150,000, after delivery through CS, making a total of N200,000 out of the total bill of N380,000.

He noted that while he went seeking for help to offset the earlier bill, an additional N150,000 was accrued, thereby forcing him to cry out for help from kind hearted Nigerians and government.

Truth Live News Media reports that the media reports that greeted the detention of the mother and her newborn has forced the hospital management to release the baby and her mother without paying further cost.

Expressing his appreciation, Mr. Abdullahi thanked the media and well meaning Nigerians for their swift intervention, leading to the UBTH management’s granting his wife and baby discharge without any additional burden or cost on him, after the initial N200,000 deposit.
