Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced a significant initiative aimed at addressing the dire state of Nigeria’s roads. In a recent statement, Umahi revealed that the Ministry of Works has presented a proposal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the reconstruction of 260 roads and eight bridges across the country. This ambitious undertaking is projected to require a substantial budget of N217 billion.

Umahi made this announcement during the inauguration of four road project committees in Abuja. The purpose of these committees is to oversee and ensure the proper execution of road construction contracts, with a specific focus on the Benin-Warri Dual Carriageway and the East-West Road Section III: Port Harcourt (Eleme Junction) to Oone Port Junction road in Rivers State.

One notable aspect of this initiative is the flexibility it allows for project redesign and quality enhancement. Umahi explained that the ministry possesses the legal authority to redefine projects to better suit the site conditions. This flexibility will be leveraged to improve the road quality, including the use of one-foot thick concrete for reconstruction.

The Minister emphasized the significance of these road projects, highlighting their crucial role in revitalizing commerce, education, security, and power infrastructure throughout the nation. He stressed that President Tinubu is fully committed to enhancing the country’s road infrastructure.

Additionally, Umahi shared that the Federal Government has already approached President Tinubu with a request for funding these critical projects, which have a total estimated cost of N217 billion. The National Assembly is also aware of this proposal, and discussions are anticipated to take place in the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Umahi further raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the East-West Road, particularly between Warri and Cross Rivers, where numerous road sections and bridges have collapsed. Immediate action is required to prevent further deterioration, as this vital transportation corridor plays a pivotal role in the nation’s connectivity.

In summary, Minister David Umahi has unveiled an ambitious plan to address the state of Nigeria’s roads, with a proposed budget of N217 billion. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation networks across the country.
