The public have been warned against indiscriminate waste disposal within the Calabar metropolis.
The Special Assistant to the Cross River State Governor on General Duties Barr Ekpenyong Akiba issued the warning on Friday.
In a statement specially signed by him, Akiba said this is to reiterate the state government’s earlier announcement on regulations guiding refuse disposal within the Calabar metropolis.
He said: “For the avoidance of doubt the hours of 6:p.m to 10:p.m have been fixed for refuse disposal.”
The government has stepped up checks to ensure that the law is not broken as it says “please note that, enforcement agents will be stationed in strategic refuse disposal points to apprehend and prosecute defaulters.”
Similarly, refuse scavengers have been banned completely from operating in the state.
Akiba in the statement said their activities have posed serious security concerns for citizens.
He therefore, called on those responsible to desist forthwith as security agents have been mandated to arrest and prosecute perpetrators.
Recall that in June 2023, Truth Live News reported that the governor of Cross River State Sen Bassey Edet Otu, upon assumption of office released new refuse disposal guidelines, and hinted at prosecution of offenders.
While charging the Waste Management Agency to live up to its responsibility in ensuring proper management of all waste generated in the metropolis.
Otu, in the release warned the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse saying defaulters no matter how highly placed will be prosecuted according to the environmental law.
