CROSS RIVER, CALABAR – Honourable Bassey Akiba, a member of the House of Representatives for Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, addressed key issues on Hit 95.9 FM on March 31.

Speaking on the topic “Empowering Communities Through Livelihood Support, Healthcare, and Education,” Akiba outlined his vision for community development and infrastructure enhancement.

Public Engagement and Community Outreach

During the broadcast, Akiba emphasized his accessibility to the public. “Beyond official meetings, you can also see me on the street,” he said, announcing his upcoming visits to Ward 8 of Calabar Municipality on Saturday and Sunday.

Truth Live News correspondent who monitored the program reports that, he also invited constituents to meet him at his residence if needed.

He acknowledged the need for further consultations on unresolved community matters. “Regarding the completion of the agreement, I will need to return for one more interview to follow up on some resolutions,” he stated. Additionally, he suggested setting up committees to tackle long-standing local issues.

Akiba expressed gratitude for public support, saying, “I sincerely appreciate your support and the opportunity to serve. Thank you for recognizing our efforts and for standing with us.”

Infrastructure Development and Community Support

The representative highlighted the significance of infrastructure investment, citing contributions from Cross Riverians and various stakeholders, including those in Lagos.

“You have been actively involved in education, healthcare, and improving the livelihood of our people,” he noted.

Akiba stressed the importance of comprehensive infrastructure beyond road construction. “We have invested in electricity, education, and healthcare infrastructure,” he said, citing improved healthcare facilities as a notable achievement.

He also acknowledged the financial constraints associated with development projects. “Infrastructure development is not free—schools, hospitals, and even streetlights require investment.”

Reflecting on progress, Akiba noted that travel to his community, which once took four hours, can now be completed in a single day. “If we are not committed to progress, then there is no point in exploring further opportunities,” he remarked, pledging continued efforts in infrastructure development.

Health and Governance

Discussing healthcare, Akiba underscored the importance of collective efforts. “Healthcare is a shared responsibility. We must come together to strengthen our system,” he urged.

He also addressed internal political divisions, which he believes hinder governance. “A divided party cannot serve the people effectively,” he said.

The former Labour Party member cautioned against misinformation and emphasized the importance of understanding legal conditions before making political moves.

Political Direction: Why Leave LP For APC?

Responding to questions about his political affiliation, Akiba defended his decision to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC). “People often ask, ‘Why not PDP? Why not another party? Why APC?’ The answer is simple: reforms take time.”

He assured constituents that government-led reforms will yield positive results. “Once these reforms are completed, people will begin to enjoy the benefits,” he explained.

He reaffirmed his commitment to APC, stating that the party is actively working to improve conditions in his constituency.

Akiba concluded by thanking the public for their engagement and support, vowing to continue working towards community empowerment and sustainable development.
