Jonathan Zirkzee, forward for Bologna, has expressed his willingness to play for the Super Eagles if the Netherlands does not extend an invitation to him.
In an interview with Soccersnews, the Bologna star discussed the fierce competition for the striking position in both countries’ national teams.
While acknowledging the tough decision, Zirkzee stated that he would not hesitate to change allegiances if he is not called up to the Dutch senior national team.
“Nigeria is not a country you choose just because you cannot play for your homeland. The competition there for attackers is perhaps just as fierce as in the Dutch team,” Zirkzee told Algemeen Dagblad via soccernews.
“Nigeria has Boniface from Leverkusen and Osimhen from Napoli, among others. It’s not as simple as thinking: The Netherlands isn’t calling, so I’ll choose Nigeria. Are they even interested in me? Maybe.
“But my dream has always been to represent the Dutch national team. And missing out on the European Championships is not necessarily a turning point. If that doesn’t happen, I’ll continue to strive.
“I would be grateful if the opportunity arose. If not, I’ll have to ensure they consider me. You always hope to reach that level one day.”
Since joining Bologna from Bayern Munich in 2022, Truth Live News reports that Zirkzee has scored 11 goals in 43 league appearances.
