September 10th marks the annual World Suicide Prevention Day, a global awareness initiative aimed at reducing the staggering number of suicides worldwide. This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” seeks to shift the conversation around mental health and encourage open dialogue to prevent these tragic events.

In Nigeria, suicide has become a growing concern, affecting individuals from all walks of life. Recent cases have highlighted the need for urgent attention to this issue.

In June 2024, Nick Imudia, the former CEO of Konga, took his own life by jumping from the balcony of his apartment in Lekki, Lagos. This shocking incident raised questions about the pressures and stresses that can lead to such a tragic outcome, even among successful individuals.

Another disturbing case occurred when a 65-year-old visually impaired man, Ewenla Adetomiwa, attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the lagoon along the Third Mainland Bridge. He had brought his two children to the bridge, believing that the government would care for them after his death. This heartbreaking incident highlights the desperation and hopelessness that can drive individuals to take such drastic measures.

These cases demonstrate that suicide is a concern for both the rich and the poor in Nigeria. It affects individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds, ages, and professions. The stigma surrounding mental health issues and the lack of access to support services can exacerbate the problem.

The World Suicide Prevention Day serves as a reminder that suicide is a preventable tragedy. By speaking out and seeking professional help, we can work together to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and prevent unnecessary loss of life.

Clinical Psychologists play a crucial role in providing support and guidance to those struggling with mental health issues. If you or someone you know is in need of help, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Let’s join forces to change the narrative on suicide in Nigeria and create a world where every life is valued and worth living.
