86-Year-Old First Black President Of World Methodist Council Is Dead

The Prelate Emeritus President of World Methodist Church, His Eminence Dr. Sunday Coffie Mbang, has been reported dead.

He died on Tuesday 16th of May, 2023, after impactful Earthly ministry of 44 years, in his hometown, having enrolled at Trinity College, Umuahia in 1962.

He was aged 86.

Right Reverend Dr. Babatunde A. Taiwo, the Secretary of Conference in a statement to all Archbishops, Bishops, Trustees and Lay Presidents and seen by Truth Live News on Wednesday said the Late Prelate Emeritus President Mbang CON, survived by the Church and children.

He was the first Petrarch’s chaplain and Bishop of Tinubu and was the longest serving Head of Methodist Church Nigeria.

His Eminence Dr. Sunday Coffie Mbang who was reported to have embodied the pioneering and path finding spirit of Nigerian Methodism was the Methodist president of Christian Association of Nigeria.

The only person to be patriarch and Prelate Emeritus, Dr. Mbang was the first black president of World Methodist Council and incorporated trustee of Methodist Church Nigeria.

The statement reads in part that “on behalf of His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, prelate Methodist Church Nigeria, the people called Methodist Church in Nigeria and the Diaspora, we condole with the family and the good people of Akwa Ibom state on this irreparable lost.”

It said he will surely and solely be missed by his beloved church to which he gave spiritual, intellectual and servant-leadership for more than two decades.

He was nicknamed the spiritual father of Akwa Ibom state.
