The Obidient Movement has accused some former governors of Abia State, allegedly led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, of plotting to destabilise the state in a bid to return it to the control of the All Progressives Congress APC.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the movement claimed that the former governors and some of their ex-commissioners have been holding strategic meetings aimed at undermining the administration of Governor Alex Otti ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the group, the alleged plot is driven by desperation to deliver Abia State to President Bola Tinubu and the APC, following the Labour Party’s victory in the state during the 2023 elections.
The Obidient Movement insisted that Governor Otti emerged through the popular mandate of Abians, buoyed by the nationwide “Obi Wave,” and has since justified the confidence reposed in him through what it described as strong performance in governance.
“It has come to the public knowledge that a meeting of former governors, alongside their former commissioners, a gathering reportedly engineered by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.”
The movement warned that any attempt to distract or sabotage the current administration would be strongly resisted by the people of Abia, noting that residents are now more politically conscious and determined to protect their mandate.
Reacting to Senator Kalu’s recent remarks suggesting that Governor Otti would not secure a second term, the group described the statement as “a direct threat to the Abia electorate and an affront to democracy.”
“The decision of who governs Abia State lies solely with the people, not with political godfathers or former office holders seeking relevance,” said the group’s spokesperson, Obiesili.
The Obidient Movement also used the opportunity to advise Governor Otti to consider joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election. It argued that aligning with the ADC would help consolidate support and prevent a split in opposition votes.
“We also want to use this opportunity call on you (Otti) to join ADC where our leader, Mr. Peter Obi, is and every other well meaning Nigerian politician is, for more united bloc votes which will not be divided,” Obiesili added.
