Former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, has declared his full support for the party’s campaign direction ahead of the 2026 elections, while also signalling interest in a future senatorial bid.
Ogunbiyi made this known on Saturday in Osogbo during a meeting with leaders and members of his political structure drawn from the 30 local government areas of the state, including the Modakeke Area Office.
The meeting focused on reviewing the outcome of the APC governorship primary election held in December 2025 and mapping out strategies for effective grassroots mobilisation ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship poll.
Addressing his supporters, Ogunbiyi directed all coordinators across federal constituencies and local councils to collapse their structures into that of the party’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
He stressed the need for unity and urged party members to accept the result of the primary election in the interest of the APC’s overall success.
According to Ogunbiyi, the selection of Oyebamiji as the party’s flagbearer had fulfilled a long-standing demand within Osun West Senatorial District, where stakeholders had consistently called for power rotation to the zone.
He noted that the development had been widely welcomed by party faithful in the district and described the moment as an opportunity for collective progress.
“The most important thing now is for Bola Oyebamiji to become the elected governor of Osun State,” Ogunbiyi said.
“If that happens, by God’s grace, I, Akin Ogunbiyi, from Iwo Federal Constituency, with the support of our leaders, will emerge as the senatorial candidate of the West,” he added.
He explained that his earlier ambition to govern the state had been suspended following the conclusion of the party’s internal process, adding that personal aspirations must give way to party interest.
“As for my personal vision to govern the state, that has become secondary now that the party has produced a candidate,” he said.
Ogunbiyi further disclosed that all aspirants who contested the APC governorship ticket had agreed to work together to ensure victory for the party.
“Every one of us resolved that we will work within our various constituencies to ensure that Bola Oyebamiji emerges as governor,” he added.
He stated that the governorship election would take precedence over any other political ambition, while noting that mobilisation efforts were already underway in Iwo Federal Constituency.
“Voters in the three local government areas in the constituency are over 170,000. “Progressives can count on Iwo,” Ogunbiyi said.
TRUTH LIVE NEWS recalls that Ogunbiyi and six other aspirants were disqualified from participating in the APC governorship primary held on December 13, 2025, over alleged irregularities related to their nomination forms.
Ogunbiyi, who flew the flag of the Accord Party in the 2022 governorship election, later defected to the APC, describing the move as a strategic step toward actualising the aspirations of the Osun West Senatorial District.
He had campaigned on a promise to address what he described as years of neglect in Osun West, a zone widely regarded by observers as the least developed in the state.
Bola Oyebamiji eventually emerged as the APC governorship candidate through an affirmation process.
