BREAKING: Mass Defection Rocks Kano as Gov Abba Kabir Dumps NNPP with Lawmakers, Reps, Council Chairmen

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), triggering one of the most significant political realignments in the state’s recent history.

The Governor’s resignation, announced on Friday, January 23, 2026, also saw the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen from the party.

Governor Yusuf formally communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, where he is registered as a party member. The resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.

In the letter, the Governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the platform and support it provided him since 2022, noting that his decision was not taken lightly.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” the letter read.

Governor Yusuf attributed his exit to prolonged internal crises within the party, citing leadership disputes and multiple legal battles currently before the courts, which he said have weakened cohesion and confidence within the NNPP.

According to him, the situation has led to growing disenfranchisement among members, deep divisions in the party structure, and uncertainty at both state and national levels.

“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” he stated.

The Governor stressed that his resignation was guided by the best interest of Kano State, emphasizing his continued commitment to peace, unity, and good governance.

“After careful reflection… I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the letter added.
