Tension briefly engulfed the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat on Monday as members of the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) attempted to block the convoy of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, during an ongoing industrial action by FCTA staff.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters converged near the secretariat as the minister prepared to leave his office, prompting security operatives to reroute his convoy through the back gate of the complex. Wike reportedly exited without the customary siren, amid heightened security concerns.
As the convoy made its way out, striking workers were seen pursuing the vehicles on foot, chanting “Ole, Ole!!” in a charged atmosphere that underscored growing frustration among staff over unresolved labour issues.
The protest, led by JUAC and supported by the NUT, is part of a broader strike by FCTA workers demanding improved welfare conditions and the implementation of outstanding agreements with the administration.
Security personnel eventually restored calm around the secretariat, while the minister’s convoy departed without physical confrontation. As of press time, the FCTA had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or the demands of the striking workers.
