Dangote Refinery Increases Petrol Price After Festive Discount

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased the ex-gantry price of petrol to ₦799 per litre, raising the cost by ₦100 from the previous price of ₦699.

The new price took effect on Tuesday, January 27, according to a statement from the refinery. It said petrol sold through MRS retail outlets will now cost ₦839 per litre, up from ₦739.

The refinery explained that the adjustment followed the end of the festive period, during which it temporarily reduced prices to ease financial pressure on households.

“With the festive period concluded, prices have been modestly realigned to sustainable levels to support long-term market stability and affordability,” the statement said.

Dangote Refinery said it had absorbed significant costs during the Christmas season to keep fuel prices low, describing the move as part of a deliberate price support intervention in the national interest.

It said this was the second consecutive festive season in which it had taken such measures, citing logistics support in 2024 and a price reduction in 2025.

Despite the earlier reduction, the refinery accused some filling stations of failing to reflect the lower prices at the pump, denying consumers the intended benefits.

“As a domestic producer, Dangote Petroleum Refinery continues to shield the Nigerian market from import-related volatility and external supply disruptions,” the statement added.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining steady petrol supply across the country and supporting energy security.

Speaking separately, the refinery’s chief executive officer, David Bird, said the plant is currently supplying about 50 million litres of petrol to the domestic market daily, with nationwide distribution running smoothly.

He said the refinery’s flexible design allows it to process different types of crude oil, ensuring continued fuel supply even during scheduled maintenance.

Mr Bird added that this helps guarantee stable and uninterrupted availability of petrol in Nigeria.
