Nigeria Air Force Investigates Civilian Deaths After Accidental Air Strike

Nigeria’s air force says it has launched an investigation after an aircraft mistakenly opened fire on a community in Niger State, killing two people and injuring several others, including children.

The incident occurred on Sunday in Kurigi village, in Mariga Local Government Area, during an air operation targeting armed bandits in the region.

Residents said a military surveillance helicopter hovered over the community for several minutes before firing. Witnesses reported that gunfire struck people inside their homes.

In a statement, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed it was aware of reports alleging civilian casualties and said it viewed the incident with “deep concern”.

The air force spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said an investigation team had been deployed in line with the military’s commitment to accountability, responsibility and transparency.

He said the protection of civilians remained central to air force operations, adding that Nigeria’s military had strengthened safeguards, training and procedures aimed at minimising harm to non-combatants.

“The Nigerian Air Force acknowledges the gravity of the reported loss of lives and injuries,” the statement said, adding that it would take responsibility where necessary and implement improvements to prevent similar incidents.

The air force said it would continue operations against armed groups while maintaining professionalism and respect for civilian lives.
