Edo Assembly Plenary Session Cut Short Over Bullets, Gunshot Marks On Wall

Lucky Obukohwo, Reporting

The first plenary sitting of the Edo State House of Assembly for the 2026 legislative year was cut short on Tuesday following the discovery of bullets and gunshot marks on the roof of the Assembly complex.

The development created tension at the hallowed chamber as lawmakers and staff arrived for the scheduled sitting, only to be informed of the security breach.

Briefing journalists on the situation, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Jonathan Ebamewu, confirmed the incident, stating that security agencies had been alerted and were already carrying out investigations.

According to him, the sitting was postponed to allow security operatives to thoroughly comb the chamber and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We were ready for sitting today when our attention was drawn to the fact that there was an incident here.

“I immediately contacted the Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), and we have left everything to them to investigate and give us a comprehensive report on what actually happened”, Ebamewu disclosed

He explained that although lawmakers were eager to commence legislative business for the year, the safety of members and staff could not be compromised.

“For now, everything is calm and we are ready to start our sitting, but unfortunately, because of the incident, we may not be able to meet today.

“We want to give the chamber to the security agencies to properly comb the place and submit a report that will be satisfactory to everyone,” he added.

The Majority Leader assured that the House remained focused and undeterred by the incident, stressing that legislative activities would resume once security agencies give the all-clear.

“Be rest assured that everything is under control. We are not distracted, and we will certainly come back to carry out our normal legislative duties,” Ebamewu said.

As at the time of filing this report, operatives of the Edo State Police Command were seen conducting a thorough security check at the hallowed chamber, while investigations into the discovery of the bullets and gunshot marks continues.
