The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a total budget of N873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, with significant allocations earmarked for election operations, technology deployment, and capital expenditure.
According to the proposal, a large portion of the budget will be devoted to logistics, personnel, voter education, and security-related support required to conduct nationwide polls across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. INEC also plans to invest heavily in technology to strengthen the credibility of the electoral process, including voter accreditation systems, result transmission infrastructure, and data management.
Capital expenditure allocations are expected to cover the procurement of election materials, vehicles, ICT equipment, and the upgrading of facilities ahead of the polls.
INEC officials say the proposed budget reflects rising costs associated with inflation, expanded voter registration, and the need to improve efficiency and transparency in elections. The proposal is subject to review and approval by the National Assembly.
The 2027 general elections will determine Nigeria’s next president, governors, lawmakers, and other elected officials, making the funding and preparedness of the electoral body a key national issue.
