The Obong of Calabar His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V. had said that the ancient kingdoms of Kano and Efik had co-existed even before Nigeria as a nation.
The royal father said this when the Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Wednesday visited him in his palace in Calabar.
Edidem Abasi-Otu said that the visit was a demonstration of the fact that they are one people with a common destiny.
While expressing delight over the visit of the Emir with his entourage, he said, “it is a symbol of the unity of Nigeria. We must continue to work together towards achieving our collective goals as a nation.”
As to the essence of the visit to the Obong of Calabar from Kano, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, said they are one people with diverse cultures and traditions.
The royal father who said It was important for them to embrace their differences and work together towards building a better Nigeria for all. Said he recalled a visit to Obong with his own Father who was the Emir of Kano, over 30 years ago.
While expressing delight at the warm reception accorded him, the Emir said, “i am glad to be here today to strengthen the bond of unity between the people of Kano and Cross River State.”

The visit which was part of the 35th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar, featured the Vice Chancellor University of Calabar Prof. Florence Banku Obi, exchange of gifts and rich display of the Efik cultural dance.
The Obong of Calabar Palace Media Unit reported the visit between the two eminent rulers, saw that duo engaged in discussions on various issues of mutual interest.
