The Federal Government has commenced the safe evacuation of Nigerians in Iran who wish to depart the country, amid escalating tensions and regional conflict in the Middle East.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), announced the operation on Tuesday via her official X account.
Officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are actively coordinating the process, guiding willing citizens across the border into Armenia for secure exit, Truth Live News learnt.
“The willing Nigerians in Iran are being safely guided across the Armenia border by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, ensuring a smooth and secure process for those seeking to depart,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
She further reassured that no Nigerian has been harmed so far amid the ongoing crisis, and embassy personnel are stationed at the border to offer necessary assistance and support to evacuees.
According to Daily Post, the evacuation effort is being carried out in collaboration with Armenian authorities, reflecting the Federal Government’s proactive measures to protect Nigerians abroad during emergencies. It underscores ongoing vigilance over developments in the Middle East and the administration’s priority on citizen welfare overseas.
Recent reports indicate that approximately 1,000 Nigerians mostly students are affected in Iran, though the current operation focuses on those who have opted to leave voluntarily. No official figure for the number already evacuated was provided in the NiDCOM update.
