Edo State is set to witness a historic event that goes beyond the realms of sportsmanship. The Dr. Asue Ighodalo Unity Gold Cup, unveiled through a collaboration between Truth Live Media Communications Ltd and Asue Ighodalo Support Groups, promises to be a symbol of unity, peace, and empowerment.
The tournament, scheduled from December 20th to 22nd at the Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, holds particular significance for the state.
Divided into Team Edo South, Team Edo Central, and Team Edo North, the Gold Cup transcends the typical football competition. It serves as a powerful mechanism to bridge gaps, foster understanding, and promote harmony among the youth, cutting across political boundaries.
The unveiling ceremony, was attended by key figures such as Hon Frank Uyi Omosigho, who represented the Chief of Staff to the governor, various present and past football stakeholders and the FA chairmen of various LGAs and affirmed their commitment and support to this unique initiative.
Dr. Asue Ighodalo, often referred to as AI by his supporters, exemplified unwavering support for this vision, highlighting a collective dedication to the progress of Edo State’s youth.
The tournament format involves a two-day round-robin competition at the iconic Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia Stadium. The stakes are high, with the winning team not only claiming the prestigious Gold Cup but also securing a commendable prize of N250k. Recognition extends to the second and third-placed teams, receiving prizes of 150k and 100k, respectively.
The Edo state FA chairman encouraged citizens to come together, celebrating not only football prowess but the collective strength and unity of Edo State’s youth.
