President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of former Super Eagles player, Henry Onyemanze Nwosu who died at the age of 62.

He described him as one of Nigeria’s most gifted footballers whose legacy will stand the test of time.

In a condolence message issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commiserated with the Nwosu family and the Nigerian football community on the passing of the iconic midfielder.

“The nation mourns an exceptionally skilled football talent whose artistry on the field remains the stuff of legends,” the President said. “Henry Nwosu’s brilliance and passion for the game inspired countless compatriots and brought pride and joy to every Nigerian.”

President Tinubu fondly recalled Nwosu’s emergence as a teenage sensation in the then-Green Eagles squad that clinched Nigeria’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980.

Nwosu went on to represent the country in several other editions of the continental tournament in 1982, 1984, and 1988.

Recognizing the midfielder’s contributions to both national glory and sports development, the President noted that Nwosu “served the nation with distinction for more than a decade” and left an indelible mark on Nigerian football history.

“The late playmaker will always be remembered for his dedication, humility, and the hope he inspired in young Nigerian athletes,” Tinubu added.

President Tinubu prayed for the repose of Nwosu’s soul and for divine comfort for his family, urging Nigerians to celebrate his enduring legacy of excellence and patriotism.
