The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the alleged vandalism of facilities belonging to Seplat Energy in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday.
John said the command received a distress call from the security control room of Seplat Energy on March 11 at about 12:00 noon, reporting that a group of youths led by their leader had vandalised and maliciously damaged the company’s signpost.
According to her, the suspects also attempted to forcefully gain access to the facility with the intention of destroying other critical installations.
She said, “Acting swiftly on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom Command, Baba Azare, operatives of the command immediately mobilised to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the operatives discovered that the company’s signpost had already been forcefully pulled down and destroyed.”
John added that the hoodlums, numbering about 25, violently resisted arrest and attempted to obstruct police operations.
She said that through a coordinated tactical response, operatives were able to arrest four suspects in connection with the incident.
The police spokesperson added that the surveillance team is currently on the trail of the suspected ring leader and other fleeing members of the group who are still at large.
She noted that efforts were ongoing to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the remaining suspects.
John condemned the act of vandalism and criminal intimidation directed at corporate facilities operating in the state, stressing that no individual or group has the right to resort to self-help, violence, or destruction of property under any guise.
“The command warns members of the public, particularly youth groups, to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
“Grievances or disputes must be channelled through lawful and peaceful means, as any person or group found engaging in acts of vandalism, violence or sabotage will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains fully committed to protecting lives, safeguarding investments and ensuring a secure environment for lawful businesses to operate across the state,” she said.
