Anambra LG Renames Road After Former Commonwealth Secretary-General

The Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State has renamed the popular Limca Road in honour of former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

The road, a major route linking Awka Old Road, Nkpor Junction, the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway, and Obosi-Umuoji Road, will now be known as Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road.

Speaking during a ceremony held at Nkpor Junction on Wednesday, the Chairman of Idemili North LGA, Stanley Nkwoka, said the gesture was aimed at recognising Anyaoku’s outstanding contributions and inspiring younger generations.

He noted that the renaming followed due legislative process within the council and has now been formally adopted into law.

“We are celebrating Anyaoku today because he represents excellence and integrity. This honour is meant to inspire future generations to emulate his values, work ethic, and commitment to service,” Nkwoka said.

He added that the local government would install signposts to reflect the new name and ensure public awareness.

Nkwoka further emphasised that the decision reflects a shift towards celebrating individuals of proven character and global impact, noting that Anyaoku’s achievements continue to bring pride to the Idemili community and Nigeria at large.

Also speaking at the event, former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, described Anyaoku as a role model whose life exemplifies integrity and dedication to service.

He stressed the need for communities to nurture future leaders who embody such values, adding that Anambra should be defined by individuals of honour and credibility.

“With this recognition, young people will be reminded that someone from this community attained global distinction through integrity and hard work,” Chidoka said.

Anyaoku, who hails from Obosi in Idemili North, was represented at the event by the President-General of the Obosi Development Union Worldwide, Ambassador Chimezie Obi.

In his remarks, Obi expressed appreciation to the local government for the honour, describing it as deeply meaningful despite the numerous recognitions Anyaoku has received globally.

He said the renaming serves as a lasting tribute to Anyaoku’s legacy and contributions to community development, national service, and international diplomacy.

“This honour will continue to inspire generations to strive for excellence and uphold the values that Chief Anyaoku represents,” he added.

The ceremony drew community leaders, government officials, and residents, marking a significant moment in celebrating one of Anambra’s most distinguished sons.
