Edo State, Nigeria
In a significant political move, 64 members of the Labour Party in Ward 003, Egor Local Government Area of Edo State have officially defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The decision, announced on Saturday, marks a notable shift in allegiance and political strategy within the statew.
Among the defectors are prominent figures within the Labour Party, including leaders, financiers, members of the Obedient Movement, and even an entire family of five. Their decision to switch camps was motivated by a shared desire to advocate for good governance and to throw their support behind the gubernatorial candidacy of Dr. Asue Ighodalo, representing the PDP in the forthcoming September 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, some cited the need to sustain the legacy of the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, whose administration has been lauded for its commitment to progressive policies and development initiatives in the state. They believe that aligning with Dr. Ighodalo and the PDP will ensure the continuation of these positive trends and further advance the interests of the people of Edo State.
The announcement of the defection was made public during a reception ceremony held on Saturday, where the Honourable Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy, Hon. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-isibor, officially welcomed the defectors into the fold of the PDP. The event served as a symbolic gesture of unity and solidarity, as well as a demonstration of confidence in the PDP’s vision and leadership.
