Edo State, Nigeria
In a significant development marking a pivotal shift in the politics of Edo State, over 200 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward 10 of Esan West Local Government Area.
The wave of defection included prominent figures such as former APC ward councilors, ward and unit leaders, among others, all of whom cited compelling reasons for their decision to switch allegiance.
Expressing their rationale behind the move, the defectors emphasized their longstanding association with the political evolution from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the APC. However, they underscored their conviction in joining the PDP due to the visible progress and development initiatives spearheaded by Hon. Collins Aigbogun, the Executive Chairman of the Council.
In their statement, they highlighted the remarkable strides made under Aigbogun’s leadership, irrespective of party affiliations, and underscored their resolve to align with the PDP to further advance the trajectory of development within their community and the local government at large.
The spokesperson for the defectors emphasized the symbolism behind their decision, stating, “Today, we have finally made up our minds to join PDP in order to consolidate the good work of the Executive Chairman of the Council. We have discovered it’s time to do away with brooms and embrace the big umbrella that is able to cover us in time of rain and sun.”
Furthermore, they hinted at a growing influx of members from the APC to the PDP, signaling a broader shift in political allegiance within the state.
Welcoming the defectors into the PDP fold on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2024, Rt. Hon. Joe Edionwele, the immediate past member representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency, commended their decision and assured them of a warm reception within the party. Edionwele affirmed the inclusive nature of the PDP, emphasizing its capacity to accommodate diverse interests.
He urged the new members to actively participate in the party’s activities and rally support for Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP gubernatorial candidate, in the upcoming elections to ensure continued prosperity and democratic dividends for all.
Hon. Collins Aigbogun, the Executive Chairman of the Council, also extended his gratitude to the defectors, affirming his commitment to delivering more developmental projects and initiatives. He emphasized the unity within the PDP and encouraged the new members to integrate seamlessly into the party’s fabric.
