Several brick workers are feared dead following a tragic sand pit collapse in Ridawa village, Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State.
Truth Live News International learnt from Legit.ng that the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly happened while labourers were excavating a deep pit for brick production when the structure suddenly caved in, trapping many beneath the debris.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and desperation as residents and fellow workers rushed to the site in a frantic effort to rescue those trapped.
A local resident, Sadiki Umaru, who joined the rescue operation, recounted the conditions at the scene.
“We used wet towels on our faces when we entered the shacks,” he said.
The collapse has thrown the community into mourning, with many residents still in shock over the scale of the tragedy.
Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency, Sani Bala, disclosed that preliminary reports indicated that about 10 persons could still be trapped underground.
He called for urgent intervention, stressing the need for professional rescue support.
“We need urgent assistance to save those still trapped. The community is doing its best, but professional rescue support is required,” Bala said.
As of the time of filing this report, rescue efforts were ongoing, with villagers and emergency responders digging through the rubble in search of survivors.
However, concerns remain high that the death toll may rise as several victims are yet to be reached.
Residents also noted that such incidents are not uncommon in rural brick-making sites, where labourers often work in hazardous conditions without adequate safety measures.
