The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has dismissed reports of an alleged coronation of an “Igbo King” in East London, South Africa, stating clearly that no such event took place.
In an official press release, the Commission addressed growing concerns following protests by some South Africans over claims that a Nigerian individual had been installed as “Eze Ndi Igbo” (King of the Igbo people) in the area.
The High Commission emphasized that no coronation occurred and none was intended, contradicting narratives circulating in the public space.
According to the statement, the development had sparked understandable concern among South African authorities, traditional leaders, and members of the public, particularly given the country’s established legal and cultural systems governing traditional leadership.
The Commission expressed regret over the situation and reaffirmed Nigeria’s respect for South Africa’s sovereignty, laws, and cultural institutions.
It also highlighted the importance of maintaining the longstanding diplomatic relationship between both countries, noting that Nigeria remains committed to mutual respect, cooperation, and African unity.
The clarification comes amid tensions triggered by misinformation surrounding the alleged installation, which had led to public protests and heightened sensitivity around issues of traditional authority in South Africa.
