Labaran Maku Dumps PDP for SDP, Blames Party Crisis

A former Minister of Information and ex-Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing internal crises within his former party.

Maku announced his defection on Tuesday while addressing journalists alongside SDP officials at his residence in Wakama, located in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area. He stated that his decision was driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to the growth and success of the SDP at both state and national levels.

According to him, the move aligns with his commitment to strengthening democratic values and advancing development. He expressed confidence that the SDP has a strong support base across Nasarawa State and noted that his entry into the party would further boost its political prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Maku also revealed that he may consider contesting the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat, following appeals from stakeholders in the district. However, he noted that such a decision would depend on approval from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Explaining his departure from the PDP, Maku said the decision was reached after extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and supporters. He described the internal challenges within the party as a major factor behind his exit.

In his resignation letter, he expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve in various capacities but emphasized the need to chart a new political direction.

He further urged political leaders to uphold democratic principles, cautioning against the imposition of candidates ahead of future elections. He also called on residents of Nasarawa State to remain peaceful and united for sustainable development.

Officials of the SDP in the region welcomed Maku into the party, assuring him of equal rights and support as a member.
