Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has prioritized regional integration, economic revitalization, and robust aviation policies, Nigeria continues to strengthen its position as a hub for trade and connectivity in Africa.

Truth Live News gathered that this significant development for regional connectivity and trade, Air Sierra Leone has resumed direct flight operations between Lagos, Nigeria, and Freetown, Sierra Leone, after more than 15 years of inactivity.

This milestone was made possible through a strategic partnership with XEJet, a Nigerian airline, which provides technical support and operational aircraft to facilitate the airline’s return to the skies.

Truth Live News gathered that yjr inaugural flight ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where dignitaries from both nations, aviation stakeholders, and guests celebrated the revival of this critical link.

Speaking at the event, Air Sierra Leone’s General Manager, Edgard Lacle, expressed joy at the airline’s return to Nigeria and emphasized the strong historical, cultural, and economic connections between the two West African nations. Highlighting the potential for growth, Lacle stated that the airline would initially operate three flights weekly—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—with plans to expand as demand increases.

Lacle remarked, “The connection between Sierra Leone and Nigeria is strong, especially in terms of trade. The market for trade and tourism is growing, and everyone is eager to be a part of it. The partnership with XEJet ensures that we have the right aircraft suited to the market, and as passenger numbers grow, we will adjust our operations accordingly.”

The inaugural flight from Freetown to Lagos carried 36 passengers, marking the beginning of what promises to be a mutually beneficial relationship.

XEJet’s Chief Executive Officer, Iza Emmanuel, described the occasion as a rebirth for Air Sierra Leone, positioning the airline as a symbol of hope, resilience, and progress for the nation. “After over 15 years, the Sierra Leonean flag again takes to the skies,” Emmanuel said, adding, “The presence of dignitaries and guests from Sierra Leone and Nigeria here today underscores the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between our nations. This partnership reflects our shared vision for growth, connectivity, and opportunity.”

The resumption of Air Sierra Leone’s operations to Nigeria underscores the importance of West African connectivity in fostering trade, tourism, and regional integration. This achievement also aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investments and collaborations under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Tinubu administration’s robust economic policies, such as efforts to revitalize the aviation industry and promote intra-African trade, have provided the framework for partnerships like this to flourish. These policies aim to position Nigeria as a hub for regional and international air travel, creating jobs, enhancing tourism, and bolstering economic growth.

The partnership between Air Sierra Leone and XEJet not only strengthens bilateral relations but also aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives of fostering seamless movement of people, goods, and services across the continent.

A Bright Future for Regional Connectivity
The return of Air Sierra Leone to Nigeria after a 15-year hiatus is a testament to the resilience of the aviation sector and the enduring bonds between the two nations. It signals a new chapter of cooperation, with the potential to boost trade, enhance tourism, and foster stronger cultural ties between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

As both nations look to the future, the success of initiatives like this will depend on sustained investments, effective policies, and the shared commitment of stakeholders to the vision of a connected and prosperous Africa.
