Xi Jinping has reiterated Beijing’s firm stance against Taiwan independence during a meeting with Cheng Li-wun in Beijing, stressing that any move toward separation would not be tolerated.
The talks took place at the Great Hall of the People, where Xi emphasized the need for closer cross-strait ties and renewed efforts toward what he described as national reunification. He stated that maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait remains a priority for Beijing.
Cheng, who leads Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang, is on a visit to mainland China aimed at easing tensions and promoting dialogue. Her trip comes at a time of increased military and political pressure from Beijing on the island.
China continues to reject engagement with Taiwan’s sitting president, Lai Ching-te, labeling his administration as separatist. Taipei, however, maintains that any discussions should involve its democratically elected government.
During the meeting, both sides acknowledged the importance of reducing tensions and fostering cooperation, although significant differences remain over Taiwan’s political status. Beijing has consistently maintained that Taiwan is part of its territory, while the island’s government rejects those claims.
