Arsenal’s Premier League title push suffered a damaging blow on Saturday afternoon as AFC Bournemouth claimed a shock 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.
The Cherries struck early through a 17th-minute opener, before Arsenal drew level just before the break Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres among the attacking options available to Mikel Arteta.
Bournemouth, resilient and compact throughout, grabbed a decisive winner in the 74th minute to seal all three points against a misfiring home side.
Despite enjoying 52% of possession and registering 10 corner kicks to Bournemouth’s one, Arsenal managed just three shots on target all match a creative flatness that ultimately proved costly.
The defeat exposed familiar vulnerabilities for Arsenal as the title race enters its most critical phase. Bournemouth, who absorbed pressure for long stretches, were ruthlessly efficient: eight shots in total, three on target, and two goals to show for it.
The visitors also showed steel under pressure, collecting three yellow cards in a combative second half but refusing to buckle. Arsenal, by contrast, made three substitutions at the hour mark in search of a response, yet could not find a way through a resolute Bournemouth backline anchored by Marcos Senesi and Bafode Diakite.
Despite the setback, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table with 70 points nine ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
However, the Gunners’ schedule offers little room for error: their next fixture is a trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City on April 19, a match that now takes on even greater significance.
With five games remaining, Arteta’s side will need to rediscover their cutting edge quickly, or risk watching a seemingly comfortable lead unravel at the worst possible time.
