US Delays Weapons Deliveries to Europe as Iran War Strains Military Supplies

The United States has notified several European allies of expected delays in previously agreed weapons deliveries, as ongoing military operations linked to the Iran conflict place increasing pressure on its defence stockpiles.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the delays are expected to affect countries in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions, many of which had purchased U.S. military equipment under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. Some of the affected systems include ammunition and other critical defence materials yet to be delivered.

European governments, including Estonia and Lithuania, have confirmed being informed of possible setbacks. Officials in these countries say the delays could impact their military readiness, particularly given their proximity to Russia.

U.S. defence authorities have indicated that the diversion of resources is tied to operational demands in the Middle East, where the conflict involving Iran has intensified since late February. The situation has required increased deployment of weapons systems, including missile defence technologies.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon reiterated that the U.S. remains committed to ensuring both its forces and allies are adequately equipped but declined to provide details on specific delivery timelines, citing operational security.

The development has added to existing frustrations among European allies, who have long raised concerns about delays in U.S. arms deliveries. Some officials are now increasingly considering alternative defence procurement options within Europe.

The strain on U.S. military resources comes amid broader global commitments, including ongoing support for Ukraine and operations involving Israel, further stretching available stockpiles.
