Eight Hospitalised After Deadly Shooting in Kyiv, Police Leadership Fallout

Eight people, including a child, remain in hospital following a deadly shooting in Kyiv that left six people dead, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The attacker, described as a Russian-born man, opened fire on civilians with an automatic weapon before barricading himself inside a supermarket, where he was later killed by police after failed negotiations.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier confirmed that multiple people were wounded in the incident, which unfolded in the Holosiivskyi district. Authorities say such attacks are extremely rare in Ukraine.

The aftermath has triggered serious scrutiny of law enforcement. The head of Ukraine’s patrol police resigned after footage circulated appearing to show officers retreating from the scene. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko condemned the response, calling it a failure and announcing an investigation.

Officials are also examining how the suspect obtained a firearms permit, raising broader concerns about gun control and civilian self-defense laws. The government is now considering updates to legislation on firearm ownership.

The wounded are receiving medical care, with one adult reported in critical condition while others, including the child, are stable.
