The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position after receiving the approval of President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The development follows a meeting between the minister and the president on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Adelabu presented a detailed account of his stewardship of the power sector over the past two and a half years.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, on Tuesday, the minister is expected to step down in the coming days. The statement noted that the timing of his resignation is aimed at ensuring stability and continuity in ongoing sector reforms.
During the meeting, Adelabu highlighted key milestones recorded under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement reforms to enhance efficiency and service delivery across the power sector.
A major highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, alongside the Medium-Long Term Integrated Resource Plan for the sector. The policy framework is designed to provide a long-term roadmap for energy security, expanded electricity access, renewable energy integration, and a more resilient power system.
The statement added that Adelabu’s planned exit also takes into account ongoing challenges in the sector, including recent drops in power generation caused by gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
President Tinubu was said to have commended the minister for his efforts and contributions, particularly in laying a solid policy foundation for the transformation of Nigeria’s power sector. He also granted his consent for Adelabu to pursue his gubernatorial ambition.
Adelabu, in turn, expressed appreciation to the president for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s power sector and national growth.
It will be recalled that the president had earlier directed all political appointees seeking elective office to resign on or before March 31.
