Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Fresh $516.3 Million Loan

President Bola Tinubu has written to the Nigerian Senate requesting approval for a new external borrowing of $516.3 million, the latest in a series of loan requests the administration has forwarded to the legislature since taking office in May 2023.

The request, transmitted via a letter read on the floor of the Senate, is expected to be referred to the Senate Committee on Finance and Local and Foreign Debts for further scrutiny before any decision is reached by the full chamber.

According to sources familiar with the request, gathered by Truthlive Live news, the loan which is to be gotten from international creditors is intended to fund critical infrastructure projects and social investment programmes aligned with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The federal government maintains that the borrowing is necessary to bridge the nation’s persistent fiscal deficit and accelerate development in key sectors, including transportation, agriculture, and power. Officials have also argued that the terms of the loan are concessional and within Nigeria’s debt sustainability threshold.

In a fresh development, the move however is likely to face pushback from lawmakers and civil society groups already concerned about Nigeria’s rising debt profile with the rising country’s total public debt has risen significantly in recent years, raising alarm among economists about the long-term burden on government revenues and the naira.

Beyond this, many citizens have taken to social media to voice their frustration, while calling for greater transparency on the utilisation of previously approved loans before giving the green light to fresh borrowing, putting the Senate in the middle of a growing national debate over Nigeria’s debt management strategy.
