Tension in Kankara: Gurbi Residents Fights Bandit Invasion as Gunmen Slay 10 in Nearby Nagodi

The security situation in Katsina State took a dramatic turn on Sunday evening 26th April 2026, as residents of Gurbi community, located in the Kankara Local Government Area, successfully mobilized to repel an attempted invasion by a large group of armed bandits.

Reports filtering in from the area indicate that the attackers, who arrived in the evening hours, were met with stiff resistance from the local population who had gathered in anticipation of the raid. While the collective bravery of the Gurbi villagers prevented the gunmen from gaining entry into their primary settlement, the encounter turned tragic when the fleeing bandits redirected their fire toward a nearby settlement known as Nagodi.

According to Daily Post Nigeria, local sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that at least ten bodies were recovered from the Nagodi area, described as a village situated directly “in front” of Gurbi, after the attackers opened fire on civilians who were attempting to escape the chaos.

The corpses have since been moved back to Gurbi, casting a shadow of grief over what was initially a successful act of communal self-defense.

This latest surge in violence highlights a disturbing trend of “strategic” attacks in the Kankara axis, where peace agreements between local communities and bandit leaders have reportedly collapsed in recent months.

Eyewitnesses criticized the response time of security agencies, alleging that early warnings regarding the movement of the gunmen were ignored until after the fatalities had occurred. “We alerted security operatives as soon as we got information about the planned attack, but there was no response until after the killings,” one resident lamented, noting that security forces only arrived later to assist in the evacuation of the deceased.

As of Monday morning, the Katsina State Police Command and the state government have yet to release an official statement regarding the casualty figures or the specific measures being taken to prevent retaliatory strikes.

For the people of Gurbi and surrounding villages, the successful repulsion of the bandits is a bittersweet victory, underscoring the growing necessity for grassroots vigilance in the face of what can be described as a worsening security vacuum.
