UN Chief Urges South Africa to End Xenophobic Attacks

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has called on South Africa to take decisive steps to end xenophobic attacks and the intimidation of foreign nationals.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 27, 2026, by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed deep concern over rising tensions and strongly condemned acts of violence and incitement against migrants in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape Province.

He reminded the international community that South Africa’s struggle against apartheid was built on global and African solidarity, stressing that such values must be upheld.

“Violence, vigilantism and all forms of incitement to hatred have no place in an inclusive, democratic society,” he said.

The UN chief noted that South Africa’s development has long benefited from contributions by people across the African continent, underscoring the importance of protecting migrants and fostering social cohesion.

While acknowledging the country’s complex socio-economic challenges, Guterres welcomed the government’s commitment to implementing its National Action Plan against Racism and Xenophobia.

He further urged authorities to ensure that investigations into recent attacks on foreign nationals are conducted promptly, independently and impartially.

Guterres also extended his goodwill message to South Africans on the occasion of Freedom Day, marking the country’s democratic progress.
