The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos State at a contract sum of N548.98 billion.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced the approval following a FEC meeting held on Thursday, April 30, 2026. According to the Minister, the decision follows multiple technical assessments which concluded that the bridge’s underwater piles and pile caps have deteriorated beyond repair.
Technical reviews conducted in 2013, 2019, and a recent investigation involving Julius Berger all indicated that rehabilitation is no longer a viable option.
The contract for the project has been awarded to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC).
The project scope includes an extension of the bridge’s length from 1.525 kilometres to 1.93 kilometres, incorporating a new flyover ramp designed to alleviate traffic congestion at the bridge’s exit. The new structure will also feature two dual navigational waterways of 105 metres each.
In a related development, the FEC approved N24.89 billion for the rehabilitation of the underwater components of the Third Mainland Bridge, a project to be handled by Julius Berger.
These infrastructure projects are part of the government’s plans scheduled for commissioning ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office on May 29.
