Blood has been spilled again in Kwara State. Suspected terrorists launched a deadly attack on a Police Mobile Force camp in Tenebo community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Saturday, leaving at least three Mobile Police officers dead and two others injured.
The incident occurred at about 3 a.m. on May 2nd when heavily armed assailants stormed the facility, catching officers completely off guard. According to Sahara Reporters, the attackers were said to have arrived in large numbers, some of them on motorcycles.
A resident, Mohammed Abdul, narrated what he witnessed to Daily Trust. “They came around 2 a.m. in large numbers and tried to enter the town but were resisted by the security, which led to heavy gunfire that lasted for hours. At the end of the gun duel, three officers were killed and two were injured. The bandits left thereafter, but nobody was kidnapped and we didn’t know whether there was any casualty on their side,” he said.
The attack triggered panic in Tenebo and neighbouring communities, with many residents fleeing their homes for safer locations. Local sources said the attackers overran the security base before retreating into the forest after carrying out the killings.
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the attack, stating: “I regret to confirm that an attack on the PMF Camp occurred in the early hours of today. I will provide more accurate and detailed information shortly.”
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Danladi, also confirmed the incident. “Yes, it happened again this morning. The terrorists killed three of our mobile police officers. The local government is doing its best. We are working to strengthen collaboration with the state and federal governments to address this situation, as it is beyond what we can handle alone,” he told Vanguard.
This is the second attack on a Police Mobile Force camp in barely one month. The latest attack also comes just 11 days after three soldiers were killed in Kemanji community following more than two hours of gunfight, bringing the total number of security personnel lost to terrorist activity in Kwara State within two weeks to six.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of the time of filing this report. Further details are expected from the Kwara State Police Command.
