A Nigerian pastor has sparked controversy after urging his followers to “fortify themselves” for protection against criminal attacks, according to a video widely circulated on TikTok.
In the clip, Pastor Oloruntimilehin Daramola who identifies himself online as the founder of The Omnipotence Mission of God tells members of his congregation to adopt what he described as protective measures in case of armed invasions in their communities.
The pastor also appealed to the Federal Government to allow ordinary citizens access to firearms, arguing that widespread gun ownership would help people defend themselves.
Addressing his followers, he said they should prepare themselves so that “if attackers come with guns, they will end up turning on each other”.
He went on to suggest unconventional tactics, including using bees to deter criminals, insisting that all his members must comply with his instructions.
“If I say they should do it and they don’t, I will send them away,” he said. “I don’t want any of my members to die.”
Pastor Daramola claimed it would be wrong for him to be spiritually protected while his congregation remained vulnerable. “I am a good shepherd. I cannot be looking while my members are being killed,” he added.
The cleric referenced several previous attacks on churches, saying that victims who called on Jesus were still killed.
He claimed their prayers were not answered on earth because “Jesus said, ‘We will meet in heaven’”.
His remarks have generated debate online, with many questioning the appropriateness of instructing worshippers to seek fortification or calling for citizens to have access to guns.
Nigeria continues to face widespread security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping and attacks on rural communities, particularly in parts of the north and south-west.
