Senator Tony Nwoye, the Senate Minority Whip representing Anambra North, has officially defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defection was formally announced today during plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Nwoye’s letter to the chamber, triggering murmurs and heightened attention on the floor.
In the letter, the senator cited deepening internal crises, leadership tussles, and protracted litigations within the ADC as reasons for his exit, describing the party as no longer viable for effective representation.
This latest defection comes barely days after Senator Victor Umeh also moved to the NDC, bringing the party’s fresh senatorial gains to three within a week. It further bolsters the momentum of the NDC, which has also welcomed no fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives in recent days.
Senator Nwoye, a seasoned politician with a strong grassroots presence in Anambra, is known for his outspokenness and developmental focus. His decision is expected to influence political calculations in the South-East, a region that remains critical in national power equations. As the political atmosphere heats up, more cross-carpeting is anticipated in the coming weeks.
NDC is steadily positioning itself as a formidable alternative platform, while traditional opposition parties grapple with cohesion. The ruling APC has so far remained largely silent on the developments, but insiders say the party is closely monitoring the shifting alliances that could reshape the 10th National Assembly and the battle for 2027.
