2027: Edo House of Reps Member Dumps APC, Joins NDC Over Clash with Governor Okpebholo

Hon. Engr. Esosa Iyawe, Member of the House of Representatives representing Oredo Federal Constituency, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and withdrawn his interest in contesting the 2027 general elections on the party’s platform.

In a formal letter dated 6th May, 2026, addressed to the Ward Chairman of APC Ward 1, Oredo Federal Constituency, Iyawe announced his immediate defection to the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC).

“I write to formally notify you that I hereby withdraw my expression of interest to contest for the position of House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections and to resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC), effective immediately,” the lawmaker stated.

Iyawe described his decision as “regrettable” but necessary after “careful reflection and consideration.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences gained in the party but cited deep political differences as the trigger for his exit.

“It is imperative to state that this decision is a result of the irreconcilable difference between me and my Governor His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State,” he wrote.

The federal lawmaker said he has chosen to align with another political platform “in line with my current convictions and aspirations.”

He requested that his resignation be duly noted in the party’s records and those of INEC, and that he be relieved of all rights, responsibilities, and obligations associated with APC membership.

The letter was copied to the State Chairman of APC Edo State and the LGA Chairman of APC Oredo Local Government.

This defection comes amid growing political tensions in Edo State following the 2024 governorship election and is expected to have ripple effects on the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
