Evacuation of Passengers From Virus-Hit Cruise Ship to Be Completed on Monday

Authorities confirmed Sunday that the full evacuation of passengers aboard a cruise ship struck by a widespread viral outbreak will be completed by Monday, bringing an end to a days-long ordeal for those on board.

The vessel, which had been anchored offshore while health officials assessed the severity of the illness, has seen hundreds of passengers and crew members report symptoms including fever, nausea, and respiratory discomfort.

Officials say the decision to proceed with a full evacuation was made after the number of confirmed cases continued to rise despite onboard containment efforts.

The evacuation has been carried out in phases, with priority given to elderly passengers, young children, and those with underlying health conditions.

Coast guard vessels and chartered ferries have been shuttling evacuees to a nearby port, where medical teams have been stationed to conduct health screenings and provide immediate care.

Local health authorities have established a temporary processing center to assess each individual before they are cleared to travel home or transferred to area hospitals if needed.

Health officials are urging calm among the public, stressing that the risk of broader community transmission remains low, as all evacuees are being carefully monitored and isolated as necessary.

An investigation into the source of the outbreak is already underway, with preliminary findings expected later in the week. The cruise line issued a statement expressing regret for the distress caused to passengers and pledging full cooperation with health authorities throughout the ongoing investigation.
