A student of the University of Benin has been shot dead in his vehicle near the main entrance of the institution’s Ugbowo campus. The incident occurred on Sunday 10th May under circumstances that have yet to be fully clarified by authorities.
According to eyewitness accounts and viral footage circulating on social media, the victim was inside a silver Mercedes Benz GLK when multiple gunshots were fired, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullets.
According to eye witnesses reports, the primary target was a male final year Political Science student who was shot dead inside the vehicle at the wheel.
A female passenger seated at the front of the vehicle also died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack, bringing the confirmed death toll to two. A third victim, a female student from the Biochemistry Department who was passing by at the time was struck by a stray bullet that hit her rib and shoulder. She was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.

The management of UNIBEN dissociated its students and staff from the incident, linking it to alleged cult activities outside the campus.
The management expressed regret over the loss of life and urged members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and continue their academic activities peacefully.
The Edo State Police Command had not issued an official statement as of the time of filing this report. The identities of the deceased and the injured student have not been officially confirmed by authorities.
