Ooni Opens Up on Mockery, Struggles Over Delay in Having Children

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has opened up about the emotional pain, public criticism, and pressure he faced over delays in having children after ascending the throne.

The monarch made the revelation while receiving visitors who came to celebrate the birth of twin princes delivered by one of his wives, Queen Mariam.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in Ile-Ife by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, the traditional ruler said he endured years of mockery during the difficult period.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the Ooni said while expressing gratitude over the latest addition to the royal family.

Oba Ogunwusi said he never imagined he would marry multiple wives while growing up, noting that the realities and traditional demands of the throne changed the course of his personal life.

According to him, his journey after becoming the Ooni of Ife was filled with unexpected challenges and difficult experiences, especially regarding family and marital responsibilities.

The monarch recalled facing intense pressure shortly after ascending the throne to quickly settle into royal marital obligations.

He also revealed that several respected traditional rulers and influential personalities had attempted to persuade his former wife to relocate to Ile-Ife at the time, but the move never materialised.

Reflecting on his early years, the Ooni disclosed that he became a father at the age of 19, describing the experience as one of the toughest moments of his life.

He explained that he initially felt overwhelmed by the responsibility, but credited his mother for encouraging him to remain focused, hardworking, and determined.

Oba Ogunwusi also appreciated the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support and encouragement over the years, describing her as a mother figure who stood by him during difficult moments.

He thanked visitors for their prayers, love, and unwavering support, adding that the mother of the twins also extended her appreciation to everyone who stood by the family.

Earlier, the Chief Imam of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdulsemiu Abdulhammed, said members of the Muslim community and other well-wishers visited the palace to celebrate with the monarch over the birth of the twins.

“We have come to rejoice with Kabiyesi. It is God who makes a person laugh when he laughs. God created everything, and childbirth comes only by His command. Kabiyesi, this is worthy of thanksgiving,” he said.

Among those who visited the palace were members of the Ife Muslim Community, the Hausa Community, traditional rulers from Ife North, the Giesi Ruling House, captains of industry, businessmen, and various cultural groups.
