A violent incident disrupted the House of Representatives primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
The clash reportedly took place on Saturday in the Ikotun area, specifically around Ile-Iwe in Egbe, where party members had gathered for the exercise. What began as a peaceful voting process quickly turned chaotic after a disagreement broke out among supporters of rival aspirants.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the argument escalated into a physical confrontation, causing panic at the venue. In the confusion that followed, gunshots were heard, and people fled in different directions, seeking safety. Some individuals reportedly jumped fences or ran into nearby houses to escape the violence.
One victim was hit during the shooting and was rushed away from the scene but later died from the injuries. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the stampede and unrest.
Residents in the area described the situation as sudden and alarming, noting that normal activities were immediately disrupted as fear spread through the community.
Security personnel were eventually deployed to the scene to restore order. According to a police source, reinforcements arrived after the situation escalated, and senior officers intervened to calm tensions. However, authorities have not confirmed whether any suspects have been arrested.
As of the time of reporting, official statements from both the police and party representatives were still pending.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about political violence in Nigeria, particularly during party primaries and elections, where competition between factions sometimes leads to clashes, injuries, and loss of life.
