ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has approved a one-month extension for the hosting of its Triennial Delegates Congress, shifting the exercise to a period between July and August 2026.
The decision was reached during the association’s Full Council Meeting held on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with members of the National Executive Committee, state chapter chairmen, and secretaries in attendance.
According to the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the Council unanimously approved an appeal seeking additional time for the conduct of the congress.
“Full Council unanimously approved an appeal for a one-month extension for the hosting of SWAN Triennial Delegates Congress, with the timeline fixed for not earlier than July and not later than August 2026,” the communiqué stated.
The Council also adopted the composition of the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), which will oversee the 2026 national elections of the association.
President of SWAN, Isaiah Benjamin, formally inaugurated the seven-member electoral committee during the meeting, mandating the body to conduct what he described as a credible, transparent, free, and fair election in line with the association’s statutes and democratic principles.
The committee is chaired by Hembadoon Orsar, while Jacob Onjewu Dickson serves as secretary. Other members include Bisi Ogunleye, Bala Bawaji, Chimezie Anaso, Emmanuel Akpan and Bushrat Yusuf.
Speaking on behalf of the committee after the inauguration, Orsar thanked the SWAN leadership for the confidence reposed in the committee and pledged commitment to a transparent electoral process.
He assured members that the committee would deliver an election capable of upholding “the integrity and standard of SWAN.”

The communiqué was drafted by a committee headed by Alfred Saiki, with Timinepre Ohia and Samuel Ahmadu serving as member and secretary respectively.
