Street Children, Not Criminal Group, Found Along Mary Slessor Avenue, Police Clarify

CALABAR, CROSS RIVER – The Cross River State Police Command has dismissed fears over an alleged security threat along Mary Slessor Avenue in Calabar, clarifying that individuals recently spotted in the area were street children and vulnerable youths rather than members of any criminal group.

The clarification followed social media reports alleging that unidentified persons had established a camp opposite the Calabar Zoo, raising concerns among residents.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said a patrol team was immediately deployed to the area to verify the claims.

According to the police, investigations revealed that the individuals were predominantly street children and vulnerable youths, most of whom are indigenes of Cross River State, while others came from neighbouring states.

The Command attributed their presence on the streets to social challenges, including parental neglect, lack of care and difficult living conditions.

“Findings from the investigation revealed that the individuals in question are not an unidentified group as suggested,” the statement said.

Truth Live News gathered that the police further stated that many of the children were already known to humanitarian organisations and concerned citizens who provide them with food, clothing and other forms of support.

According to the statement, representatives of Street Aid Nigeria were present during the police visit and confirmed ongoing efforts to sensitise the children and reunite them with their families.

The Command noted that no security threat was identified during the operation but assured residents that the area would continue to be monitored.

“While no security threat was identified during the investigation, the Command will continue to monitor the area and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, humanitarian organisations, and relevant State Government agencies,” the statement added.

The police commended residents whose observations prompted the verification exercise, describing public vigilance as critical to effective policing.

The Command urged citizens to continue reporting suspicious movements and security concerns through appropriate channels while avoiding the spread of unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic.

Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the police said efforts would continue to ensure the protection of lives and property while supporting initiatives aimed at addressing the welfare needs of vulnerable children living on the streets.

The development has also drawn attention to the growing challenge of child neglect, homelessness and youth vulnerability in Calabar, with humanitarian groups continuing efforts to provide support and facilitate family reunification for affected children.
