A traditional ruler in Abia State has urged residents, particularly young people, to remain peaceful and avoid retaliatory actions following the killing of a final-year nursing student in neighbouring Imo State.
Eze Paulson Nwankwo, the traditional ruler of Anunu Ukwu Ancient Kingdom in Obingwa Local Government Area, made the appeal while reacting to the death of Wendy Achumba, a student who was found dead at her residence in Umulogho Community, Obowo Local Government Area.
The monarch expressed concern that any attempt at revenge could escalate tensions and create further insecurity. He called on affected individuals and communities to allow security agencies to complete their investigations and ensure justice is served through lawful means.
According to him, the arrest of suspects in connection with the incident is a sign that authorities are actively pursuing the case. He encouraged community leaders and traditional institutions in the area where the crime occurred to cooperate with investigators by providing useful information that could help uncover all those involved.
Nwankwo also extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful loss and offering prayers for strength and comfort during the difficult period.
Achumba was reportedly nearing the completion of her nursing education and had recently finished her midwifery training before the tragic incident occurred.
Police authorities confirmed that multiple suspects are currently assisting with investigations. According to officials, law enforcement officers responded immediately after receiving reports of the incident and launched a detailed inquiry.
The Imo State Police Command stated that some individuals initially detained during the early stages of the investigation were later released after being cleared of any involvement.
Investigators subsequently arrested additional suspects, with police saying evidence recovered from the scene, including items believed to be linked to the crime, has been sent for forensic examination.
The police assured the public that the investigation remains ongoing and pledged to disclose further details once the process is completed.
Community leaders and residents have continued to call for justice for the deceased student while urging all parties to maintain peace as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.
