CALABAR , CROSS RIVER – A suspect arrested in connection with the alleged murder of two persons in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, has told investigators that the killings were motivated by a desire to avenge family members lost during a communal crisis nearly three decades ago, the police have disclosed.
The revelation emerged as the Cross River State Police Command provided an update on its ongoing investigation into the incident, stressing that the suspect’s statements remain subject to verification.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the suspect, identified as Akaninyine Eretus, 40, is currently in police custody and assisting investigators.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly admitted involvement in the deaths of two individuals identified as Okokon and Okon, whose other names have yet to be established.
The Command disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect claimed he carried out the attacks in retaliation for the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal conflict in the area about 29 years ago.
“He further alleged that one victim was killed while asleep, while the second was attacked with a machete,” the statement said.
Police said the suspect claimed his actions were motivated by “a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis in the area approximately 29 years ago.”
The Command, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions from the suspect’s account, emphasizing that investigators are still working to establish the facts surrounding the case.
“The Command emphasizes that the suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification,” the police stated.
Investigators have so far recovered two bodies believed to be those of the victims.
The remains have been deposited in a hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
While the investigation continues, the police urged residents and members of the public to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information capable of heightening tensions within the community.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to refrain from spreading unverified information, rumours, or messages capable of compromising ongoing investigations or causing unnecessary tension within the community,” the statement added.
The Command also advised residents to rely on official updates regarding the matter, assuring that further information would be made available as investigations progress.
Truth Live News gathered that the development has drawn attention to the lingering impact of communal conflicts and the potential consequences of unresolved grievances, even decades after violence has subsided.
Police said investigations remain ongoing and pledged to communicate further developments as they unfold.
