FIFA Introduces New Pre-match day Ceremony at World Cup 2026

FIFA has unveiled a bold new vision for pre-match ceremonies at the 2026 World Cup, designed to deepen the connection between players and fans while elevating a moment already rich with anticipation.

In one of the most visible changes to the tournament’s pre-match ritual, every player selected in the matchday squad will gather around the centre circle banner for the national anthems, ensuring that every individual; not just the starting XI experiences that symbolic moment of pride and emotion when representing their country on football’s greatest stage.

Players will also enter the pitch through a dedicated arch closest to the tunnel, and extra-large country flag banners will feature as part of the on-pitch elements.

The new pre-match ceremony introduces an immersive, 360-degree concept that transforms the stadium into a shared stage, with on-pitch elements carefully positioned so that no matter where supporters are seated, each will have a distinct and engaging perspective.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the change as a statement of collective identity.
“Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone in the stadium. The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that.”

The new ceremony is designed to make the anthem moment more inclusive, instead of limiting that scene to the starting players, FIFA now wants the full matchday squad to be part of the visual and emotional build-up.

The timing makes sense because the 2026 tournament is expanding across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and FIFA is trying to make that larger scale feel more personal inside each stadium.

With up to 26 players per squad potentially forming a ring around the centre circle before every one of the tournament’s 104 matches, the ceremony promises to be one of the most striking images of a World Cup already billed as the biggest in history.
