The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has commended Governor Umo Eno for the payment of outstanding arrears owed to local government workers across the state.
In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, and signed by the State President of NULGE, Comrade Anestina Iweh, the union described the move as a strong demonstration of the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and wellbeing.
The union expressed appreciation to the governor for facilitating the settlement of the long-standing obligations, noting that the intervention had brought significant relief to thousands of local government employees.
“The successful payment of the outstanding arrears owed to local government workers is a significant demonstration of Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to the welfare of workers in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement said.
NULGE also acknowledged the contributions of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong; the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in the state and Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Uwemedimo Udo; and the 31 local government chairmen for their roles in ensuring the settlement of the inherited arrears.
According to the union, the collaborative efforts of the state government and local government authorities were instrumental in clearing the outstanding obligations left by previous administrations.
“NULGE sincerely appreciates the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the ALGON Chairman, and all the 31 local government chairmen for their collective efforts in ensuring the settlement of these outstanding obligations,” the statement added.
The union noted that the payment had restored confidence among workers and boosted morale across the local government service.
“This intervention has brought immense relief to local government employees across the state, restored confidence in government, and renewed the morale of workers who patiently awaited the settlement of the arrears,” it stated.
NULGE further said the payment reflected the government’s understanding of the challenges faced by workers and its determination to improve their welfare and productivity.
The union added that the successful clearance of the arrears had strengthened workers’ confidence in the leadership of Governor Eno and other stakeholders who contributed to the process.
“NULGE remains committed to supporting the implementation of the ARISE Agenda and assures the government of the continued loyalty, dedication and commitment of local government workers to efficient service delivery at the grassroots,” the statement said.
The union described the settlement of the outstanding obligations as another milestone in efforts to strengthen the local government system, improve workers’ welfare and enhance service delivery across Akwa Ibom State.
